Whether you’re
missing one, multiple, or all your teeth, this unique method of treatment can
improve your oral health by stimulating your jawbone and restoring your entire
tooth structure – a far better solution that restorations that simply give you
the look of a complete smile. But before you arrive for your first appointment,
there are a few key terms you should know that will help you to become more
familiar with the pieces that will make up your new smile.

Implant

Also known as a fixture, a dental implant that is surgically
placed into your jawbone and supports a restorative prosthetic (i.e. crown,
bridge, denture). Fusing to the bone, the implant serves as a stable foundation
for the restoration and is designed to last for decades or a lifetime. Dental
implants are often viewed as a better treatment option than traditional bridges
and dentures because of their greater functionality and improved stability.

Abutment

This small appliance is attached after a patient returns to
have the custom prosthetic placed on top of the implant. The abutment is the
connector piece that is attached to the top of the implant.

Osseointegration

After the implants are placed into the jawbone, your dentist
will close the surgical site and send you home to heal. Over the course of 3-6
months, a process known as osseointegration will need to occur in order for the
implant placement to be successful. This includes the implant fusing to the
jawbone and surrounding tissue.

Titanium

Unless otherwise specified, it is likely your dental
implants will be made of titanium. This is beneficial because titanium makes it
possible for more people to receive treatment, as it is less likely to cause an
allergic reaction. Titanium is also extremely lightweight but strong, allowing
for greater stability that can last a long time.

Crown

A dental crown or “cap” sits on top of the dental implant. Whether
your tooth was lost as a result of infection, decay, or injury, a crown can be
used for many reasons, including:

Restore an existing tooth’s natural structure

Provide necessary protection from future decay
or damage

Attach to the abutment that is connected to a
dental implant

Zirconia

An alternative to titanium implants is zirconia. Although
extremely rare, there are a few instances where someone might be allergic to titanium.
If this should be the case, your dentist can use this type of implant to
achieve the same result. In fact, with zirconia, the risk of bacterial growth
is lower, and patients might have better gum health.

Now that you’re more familiar with the different aspects of dental
implants, you might not feel as confused when listening to your dentist talk
about the process during your initial consultation. But don’t worry. Should you
have any questions or concerns, never hesitate to ask.

About the Practice
At Aesthetic & Family Dentistry Specialists, our team of professionals offer a level of quality dental care that exceeds the expectations of all patients who walk through our doors.
